Berklee College of Music scholarship graduate Alex Mathias presents music written by the co-developer of Bebop, Charlie Parker. His Quintet perform play a selection of his most famous tunes including Confirmation, Now's The Time and My Little Suede Shoes among others.

Expect to hear music by Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock and more.

The Chet Baker Story at JJ Smyths, Monday May 2nd

Following a sell out Irish tour in spring 2010 with Kind Of Blue Sessions, Belfast-based pianist John Leighton presents The Chet Baker Story. The listener is presented with an account of Baker’s early success with Gerry mulligan, his drug addiction and decline, and his comeback in later career. Other points of focus include tracks from his divisive album “Chet Baker Sings” and thoughts on the conspiracy around his untimely death in Amsterdam 1988. From a prison sentence in Italy to a brief career in Hollywood studios, Bakers life was a fruitful yet troubled existence which makes an exciting tale. The show is narrated by BBC’s Linley Hamilton who also feature’s on vocals and Trumpet. For more details of other stops on this 10-date tour click here
